In this video, a skater performs a sit spin variation with the free leg held to the side: sit spin sideways. This position is also known as the ‘broken leg’ spin.
The skater enters the variation from the basic sit spin position. To begin, she performs a backward crossover, leaning forward in preparation for the spin, then pushes onto a left forward outside edge with her left arm held strong in front of her. She brings her free leg and free arm around until they are straightened in front of her, with her hands clasped together for the basic sit spin (0:04 to 0:06 in the video).
Next, she transitions to the sit sideways variation. To prevent the common error of straightening up between two sit spin positions, she continues to press forward, feeling as though she is leaning forward and twisting her upper body in the direction of rotation. She holds the sit sideways position for several rounds, between 0:07 and 0:11 in the video.
When the skater has finished, she stands up and straightens her arms and her right leg in front of her. She maintains the spinning momentum and balances over the center of the spin, then pushes out into a landing position.
