In this video a skater demonstrates transitioning from a layback spin to a side layback spin, and lastly to the haircutter spin.

Layback (0:00 – 0:03)

She begins by pushing into the spin on a forward outside edge, keeping her left arm in front of her as she establishes her balance spinning on her skating leg. She forms the attitude position of the layback spin with her free leg bent and turned out behind her. Her hips and shoulders are stacked over the left side, maintaining her balance.

Side Layback (0:04 – 0:06)

For the side-layback spin, she slips her right arm behind her back, reaching down the back of her left leg while leaning her upper body to the right. Her left arm is stretched over her head, and her left shoulder is positioned above her right shoulder. She keeps tension in her limbs to maintain the side layback for several rotations.

Haircutter (0:08 – 0:15)

To reach the haircutter position, she slides her right hand down her right leg to grasp her blade near the heel, then pulls her right wrist toward her head. A common mistake at this point is letting the free side (this skater’s right side) sag to the right, resulting in loss of momentum; the skater prevents this by leveling out her shoulders as she pulls her foot toward her head.

Lastly, when the skater has finished, she releases the haircutter and pushes out into an exit position.
