In this video clip, spin specialist Kim Ryan tells her young skater “find your baby toe” during her layback spin, referring to the position of the skating foot (the left foot for this skater) while spinning. This tip helps the skater stay centered throughout the spin and avoid the common mistake of falling to the inside edge of her skating foot.

The error of rolling the skating ankle and blade to the inside edge during a layback can result in loss of speed and a wide circle etched in the ice by the skating blade; this means the spin was not centered. Focusing on the “baby toe” at the outside edge of the skating foot can help a skater improve this.

Note that this skater seems to be centered best between 0:04 and 0:06 in this video.
